Assignment #12: Comparison of Digestive Systems in Other Species

On Moodle, I’ve uploaded several Powerpoint files, files, worksheets, and other resources concerning human digestion.  However, we need to know a few things about other species to help us understand digestion, and thus nutrition, in general.

See the list of animals below.  PICK ONE, but once someone has posted that animal, you have to choose a different one. Duplicate posts will not receive a grade.  Do a decent amount of research and post what you’ve learned.  This should be a good, interesting, and informative post.  Don’t just type what you think.  You will need to do some digging to see what you can find on each of these species.  Don’t post a brief, sketchy paragraph that lacks some detail!

Why these particular animals?  Some are of economic importance, even as food sources.  Some are just interesting and are so different that they are fun to discuss.
Each student--choose ONE, but you can't use the animal if someone has already posted that information.

Cow, Pig, Deer, Rabbit, Goat, Sheep, Dog, Cat, Horse, Chicken, or Rat

The assignment is due no later than  Saturday 1/20/18 at midnight

  1. Rat Digestive System

The setup of the digestive system depends on the habitual foods eaten by the animal. Carnivore digestive system are relatively short in comparison to the digestives system of a herbivore. This is due to the extreme about of cellulose, which is not easily digested, consumed by herbivores. They are equipped with a number of internal microorganism that help with the breakdown of the cellulose. A ratio an omnivores. They eat seeds, fruit, grains, nuts, flowers, leaves, insects, birds, reptiles, fish, eggs, and fungus. They typically consume about 1 ounce of food and drink about 1 ounce of water each day. Now note that we are not talking about a NYC rat! Just based on there size I would like to assume that consume more than the average rat. Due to the fact that rats are in fact omnivores, the digestive system of a rat is identical to the digestive system of a human. This is why they are used in a number of experiments. More specifically drug testing experiments. The digestive system is as follows:
    1)Buccal Cavity
    2)Pharynx
    3)Esophagus
    4)Stomach
    5)Pyloric Sphincter
    6)Small Intestine
    6.1)Duodenum
    Descending Limb
    Transverse Limb
    Ascending Limb
    6.2)Jejunum
    6.3)Ileum
    7)Large Intestine
    7.1)Caecum
    7.2)Colon
    Ascending Limb
    Transverse Limb
    Descending Limb
    7.3)Rectum
    8)Anus

  2. Rabbit Digestive System

The setup depends on the foods eaten by the animal. An herbivore, such as a rabbit, is uniquely designed to consume large amount of plant material. The digestive system of an herbivores is quite a bit longer than a carnivore’s digestive system. They eat plants that are very high in fiber, which is indigestible to mammalian digestive enzymes. That means that humans and many other animals cannot utilize the nutrients found in these plants. A rabbit’s digestive tract is small compared to other herbivores, such as horses and cattle. The digestive system consists of the following:
    1. Mouth
    2. Esophagus
    3. Stomach
    4. Small intestine
    5. Large intestine and cecum
    6. Colon
    7. Rectum
    8. Anus
