Assignment #1: Why am I here?

Welcome to BC's Human Nutrition course blog.

"Why am I here?" is the first question you must address as a comment to the post, and if there is something more personal you wish to share, please email those comments to me privately. Any thing you share privately will remain private.

So, why ARE you? Why this course? Why now?

You answer doesn't matter, as long as you are honest and give me a decent, thoughtful answer. [Even if your answer is "it's a Bio course and I needed the credits and I wanted to do it in my PJs].

I am here because YOU are here.  Having nutritional challenges of my own (celiac disease, a zillion allergies, living on the 'food island' of Bethany College) I hope I can bring some unique perspectives to you as you study the basics of human nutrition.  However, how each of you participates will determine the route and manner in which we study the material.

I've taught several online courses, and, although I do like them, I will certainly miss having the opportunity to meet you daily, in person.

Remember the course will require you to take the final in person.  I'm hoping that could happen the last Friday of Jterm.  Please email me feedback on that subject.  At some point, I need for us all to meet as a group ONCE in person--and this could happen the Friday of the final, or another date that works for all (even if it's during the 1st week of regular classes); I prefer for the meeting to be at the course's end.

What are your goals for the course?

What are your nutritional challenges?

Nutritional challenges of those around you (family, etc)?

Without doing ANY research, what are your current thoughts about nutrition in general?

How do you think it affects human health, the community in which you live (school and home--2 separate communities), and the world in which we live?

This is just a 'what I think now' type of question. Don't give a brief, sketchy answer--but you should only post what you think, not based on any research.

Concerning the on-line format, address:

1. Have you taken an online course before?

2. If so, what was the format/style? Did you like the format? Did you learn in that course? How would you improve the course?

3. What are your concerns about the online format? (or course in general)

4. How would you like this course to proceed? If you have suggestions from the beginning, let me know now and I'll do my best.

Concerning something you'd like to know:

1. List 5 things you want to learn in the class.

2. List 3 human diseases or issues of human health you think are related to diet (no research necessary--it's OK to be wrong)

3. Which animal has a digestive system closest to the human? (again, don't cheat and do research--just make a guess and tell me why you chose that animal)

  2. I'm here because when I chose to take this course I wanted to go into the field of psychiatry and work with mental illnesses including eating disorders. I thought taking this course could help me understand the more scientific side of disorders like anorexia and how it affects the body. I have now decided to go with more of a therapy route, but I believe this course will still help me to understand the mental disorder as well as my own health.

My goal for the course is to better understand the food that I'm putting into my body and hopefully make better choices of what I'm eating.
I don't believe I have any nutritional challenges and neither do those around.
My thoughts are that people aren't that educated on nutrition which is why so many people have bad eating habits.
I think it affects human health in a big way and is why obesity is such a problem. I think at school, nutrition is thought about more since everything at the cafe seems to be healthier than choices I have at home. The choices at home aren't as healthy as here although my mom is starting a diet with all organic foods. I think the world relies on fast food and that's not as healthy as what we can do on your own.

I have not taken an online course before so I have no idea what to expect but I'm more of a hands-on learner and like to be face to face when learning. I'm concerned about this but I'm looking forward to the challenge. I'm also not sure how the course should proceed having no experience with online classes so I just plan to follow your lead.

    1. I'm hoping to learn a little bit about a diet and healthier choices I can make.
    2. I know nothing about biology so I'm curious to see the biology side of all this.
    3. Is there something that I eat that is biologically bad for me?
    4. Am I at a higher risk for certain diseases because of what I eat?
    5. Do some things affect humans the same way they affect animals.

    1. Diabetes
    2. Stroke
    3. Obesity

I think primates have similar digestive systems to humans considering that their biology is similar to humans.

  3. I registered for the class because well even though it was online I believe that nutrition is a major part it our everyday lives and would like to learn a lot more about it and how it can affect our bodies in the long run.

The goals I have for this course is at the end is to have full knowledge of obtaining the food necessary for my own health and growth but also to expand my knowledge and learn something new. I have challenged myself to watch my intake on certain foods and eat healthier in the process.

After this course I Intend to hopefully be able to challenge my family or anyone around me to eat better and learn more about nutrition as well.

Nutrition plays a huge affect in in human health no matter where you live but in the world today people like to resort to going out to eat or eating fast food instead of cooking a healthy home meal.

I have never taken an online class before but the only concern I have would be if the Internet would go down and also the loss of face to face interaction if we don't understand something.

    Things I'd like to know:
    1) do diets actually work?
    2) what exactly is a healthy diet?
    3) how much of a nutrient is too much?
    4) How is food digested?
    5) Meal Planning

    Diabetes
    Cancers
    Dementia

I'm going to say mammals have the same digestive system.

    1. "Mammals" is too broad, as it includes animals like the ruminants that are VERY different from us. More on this later...

  4. Why are you taking this course?
While I do have interest in nutrition, my main reason for taking this course is that it is a required class for many grad schools I am applying to.

What are your goals for the course?
    - To have a good understanding of nutrition so that I can help better understand patients and how/ why their body might be working a specific way.

    What are your nutritional challenges?
    - I should probably be gluten free and have been suggested to go dairy free as well, but I like ice cream too much.

Nutritional challenges of those around you (family, etc)?
Little brother has genetic marker suggesting his body has an extremely low gluten tolerance, so he’s gluten free.

Without doing ANY research, what are your current thoughts about nutrition in general?
I think nutrition is extremely important and with the proper diet, may illness can possibly be avoided. On top of that there are many misconceptions when it comes to healthy nutrition and say dieting or working out.

How do you think it affects human health, the community in which you live (school and home--2 separate communities), and the world in which we live?
    - Like I said above, there are many misconceptions about healthy nutrition when it comes to things such as dieting and or working out. People see things on tv, such as protein powders and think that they need these things to “get healthy”, but in reality they're getting enough protein from their daily diets.

    Concerning the on-line format, address:

    1. Have you taken an online course before?
-yes an online calc class provided by CCAC
    2. If so, what was the format/style? Did you like the format? Did you learn in that course? How would you improve the course?
-It was a combination of blackboard and an online book. Test and quizzes were taken online through the books website and the teacher sent homework by pdf and we sent in finished work through email. I liked the format and did well in the class, wouldn't have changed it.
    3. What are your concerns about the online format? (or course in general)
-I’m not too concerned with the online format, I know how to get a hold of you if needed though your test are pretty rough.

Concerning something you'd like to know:

    1. List 5 things you want to learn in the class.
what a good daily balanced diet consist of
    how nutrition affects joints
are there any health benefits to being a vegetarian or vegan
what foods are good for “belly function”
    nutrient toxicities

    2. List 3 human diseases or issues of human health you think are related to diet (no research necessary--it's OK to be wrong)
    diabetes
    heart disease
    high blood pressure

    3. Which animal has a digestive system closest to the human?
Pigs- pigs are omnivores like humans and we use their intestinal lining for medical repairs. I’ve also heard of it somewhere, probably on tv.

  5. I have goals of becoming a forensic patholagist one day so in order to that I need to attend medical school. Currently my background is mainly chemistry and forensics so I am taking this class because I figure anything I can learn about the human body would be beneficial. I also need a better GPA so taking a free class I can benefit from that can boost my GPA sounds like a great idea to me!

What are your goals for the course?

Just to learn anything I can that I don't already know, and get a good grade to help better my GPA.

    What are your nutritional challenges?

Honestly don't have really any I can eat almost anything. I have pretty fast metabolism. when I was younger it was an issue because I was skinny and wanted to put on some muscle and fat so I just ate a lot more. I ate more bread and things with carbs as well as taking protein shakes after working out, but really anything at all helped.

Nutritional challenges of those around you (family, etc)?

My dad's side of the family seems to be like me in the sense that they have fast metabolisms. My moms side can't say the same there are some over weight.

Without doing ANY research, what are your current thoughts about nutrition in general?

I don't really think about my personal nutrition anymore, after I put on the weight I was looking for I was satisfied. But I think its important for those who have nutritional goals, to focus on what you are eating.

How do you think it affects human health, the community in which you live (school and home--2 separate communities), and the world in which we live?

Nutrition definitely plays a factor in everyday life due to the fact that many people are effected by food allergies. The community aspect people who own restaurants or are serving a variety of people they must consider all different diets and food allergies. At home as far as nutrition goes it forces you learn about your body and how it reacts to different diets. In the world in general it is tricky because it causes people to be more aware of the production of food and how it effects the quality of food.

    Concerning the on-line format, address:

    1. Have you taken an online course before?

NO, I have never taken one before but I am looking forward to what it will be like.

    3. What are your concerns about the online format? (or course in general)

In general I have been concerned about taking an online class because you are teaching yourself almost, so what do you do when you need that extra help because you just can't grasp the concept

    4. How would you like this course to proceed? If you have suggestions from the beginning, let me know now and I'll do my best.

Not sure, let's see what you have!

Concerning something you'd like to know:

    1. List 5 things you want to learn in the class.
How does nutrition effect your genes? (genetics diseases)
How does nutrition effect your mood?
Are the nutrition standards pushed by the media true? (I.e. is milk really essential)
How do certain food effect the body internally?
Can you tell the type of nutrition someone had based on the body?

    2. List 3 human diseases or issues of human health you think are related to diet (no research necessary--it's OK to be wrong)

    addictive personality
    depression
the fact that the body begins to deteriorate as you age

    3. Which animal has a digestive system closest to the human? (again, don't cheat and do research--just make a guess and tell me why you chose that animal)

Monkeys - pretty sure there the most like humans, so I assume that it applies here too.

Welcome to BC's Human Nutrition course blog.

"Why am I here?" is the first question you must address as a comment to the post, and if there is something more personal you wish to share, please email those comments to me privately. Any thing you share privately will remain private.
I have always been interested in human nutrition and how the body works. And also, what is healthy for you to eat and what isn’t healthy for you to eat. Another thing that I am interested in is how to live healthy.

So, why ARE you? Why this course? Why now?
Because I am interested in human nutrition and how to better myself. I chose this course because it is an interesting topic to me. Because it is being offered for J-term.
